White is the most popular paint color for a reason. It’s clean, bright, and works with almost any style. But choosing the right white is harder than it looks. Some whites lean warm, some lean cool, and the light in your home changes everything. Here in the Treasure Valley, we get bright summer sun and gray winter skies, so a white that looks perfect in July can feel cold in January.
Here are Sherwin-Williams whites we think work well in Idaho homes, plus tips for choosing.
Warm Whites
Alabaster SW 7008
Alabaster is a soft, warm white with a creamy feel. It’s a favorite for whole-house interiors because it never feels stark. In north-facing rooms or during gray winter months, Alabaster keeps things cozy. It also works well on cabinets and trim.
Greek Villa SW 7551
Greek Villa is another warm white, a touch creamier than some. It’s a great choice for living rooms and bedrooms where you want a gentle, welcoming feel.
Dover White SW 6385
Dover White is a warmer, more yellow-leaning white. It’s lovely in traditional homes and with wood floors and trim. It can look rich on exteriors, especially with darker accents.
Clean, Balanced Whites
Pure White SW 7005
Pure White is a versatile, clean white with just a little warmth. It’s a safe pick for trim, doors, ceilings, and walls when you want white that looks white without feeling icy.
Extra White SW 7006
Extra White is a crisp, bright white. It’s a popular choice for trim and ceilings and for modern looks. In rooms with lots of cool light, it can feel cooler, so sample it first.
Snowbound SW 7004
Snowbound is a soft white with a subtle cool undertone. It’s a good choice if you want a fresh look that isn’t stark, and it pairs nicely with grays.
Shoji White SW 7042
Shoji White sits right on the edge between white and off-white. It has a soft, earthy feel that’s beautiful in homes with natural textures and warm wood.
How to Choose the Right White
- Check your light. North-facing rooms get cooler light, so warm whites often look better. South-facing rooms can handle cooler whites.
- Look at fixed finishes. Flooring, countertops, and tile all have undertones. Pick a white that works with them.
- Think about the season. Treasure Valley winters can be gray. A slightly warm white keeps rooms from feeling cold.
- Sample big. Paint large samples on several walls and look at them morning, noon, and night.
Try Before You Paint
Sherwin-Williams offers free color tools, including the ColorSnap Visualizer, on sherwin-williams.com. You can upload a photo of your room or home and try colors on it before you commit.
Note: Always check colors in person. Screens and printed chips can look different from paint on your walls, so sample before you decide.
Whites on Exteriors
White exteriors are classic, but full sun makes whites look brighter than they do on a chip. Many homeowners go a step warmer or softer outside than they would inside. Pair a white body with dark trim or a dark front door for contrast, or a white trim with a deeper body color.
